CAIRO: An American accused of evangelizing in Egypt was arrested on arrival at Cairo airport and deported overnight, an airport official said on Tuesday.

Airport authorities picked up the 71-year-old man, who was on a list of people banned from entering Egypt, on his arrival from New York on Monday night. He was deported and put on a flight bound for Amsterdam.

The man is seen as “a danger to Egypt’s national unity, the official said.

He is accused of “evangelizing in residential areas in Egypt a few years ago, which infuriated local people, the official added.

A US embassy official in Cairo declined to confirm or deny the information, citing US privacy laws. -AFP
