CAIRO: After the tragic loss of her unborn child, Galeela Mohammed Ahmed, 42, kidnapped her friend Naanaa’s newborn.

Sources say that Ahmed, who sells clay pots in El Agouza, was too afraid to tell her husband of the miscarriage, so she stole the baby and tried to pass it off as her own. She tried hard to convince her husband that she had actually given birth.

Naanaa Yaseen Farahat, the infant’s mother, a fruit vendor, said that she turned around one day while she was at her stand, to find that her one-month-old son, Mohammed, was missing. She reported the kidnapping to the chief of police at El Agouza station.

Adel El Shazly, chief of the Giza investigations bureau, said an eyewitness named Mahmoud Mustafa Ismail, 19, came forward, saying that he saw Galeela take the baby while Naanaa was distracted.

Police then arrested Galeela and returned the baby back to Naanaa.

Galeela explained that she was six months pregnant when she miscarried, and was too afraid of her husband’s reaction. That, she says, is what prompted her to kidnap her friend’s newborn son.
