CAIRO: Prosecutor General Abdel Meguid Mahmoud ordered the examination of nine antique paintings that were mysteriously stolen from the Mohamed Ali Palace in Shubra on March 10.
The paintings were retrieved last Thursday.
Omar Al-Dib, a media relations official at the Ministry of Culture, confirmed the news to Daily News Egypt.
The committee will include art historians and university professors specialized in antique paintings who will verify whether or not these are the originals.
Mahmoud has also demanded the re-examination of the place where the paintings were displayed and the palace’s various exits.
El-Dib said that the nine paintings were found inside in the palace garden after the police was tipped off to their location by an anonymous caller on Thursday.
The ministry also announced that the original paintings will not be displayed in the palace but will be substituted with replicas because some of the original paintings were torn.
