RIYADH: Saudi diplomats in the Sudanese capital have recently received threats that are being taken seriously by Riyadh, the foreign ministry said on Thursday.

"There was a threat … We are coordinating with local officials" to maintain the safety of Saudi diplomats in the country, the ministry spokesman Osama Nugali told AFP without elaborating.

"We take any threat seriously," he added.

Saudi-owned newspaper Asharq Al-Awsat reported on Thursday that several Saudi diplomats in Khartoum, including the charge d’affairs, have been regularly receiving phone text messages for more than a month containing threats of "physical liquidation".
