SANAA: Eight people were wounded in clashes between activists and police in the southern Yemeni town of Daleh on Tuesday during the funerals of four civilians killed last week, witnesses said.
"At least eight people were wounded in an exchange of fire between police and members of the southern movement" at the funeral for the four killed in government shelling of Daleh on June 6, witnesses told AFP.
A soldier was also killed in last week’s violence.
The latest clashes broke out when members of the Southern Movement, a coalition of groups wanting greater autonomy or independence for the region, tried to replace the Yemeni flag with that of the former South Yemen.
South Yemen was independent from the time of Britain’s withdrawal in 1967 until it united with the ex-North Yemen in 1990. The south seceded in 1994, sparking a short civil war that ended with the region overrun by northern troops.
Residents of the south, who complain of discrimination by the Sanaa government in the allocation of resources, hold frequent protests.
