CAIRO: Information Centers for Local Development (ICLD) workers ended their sit-in at 4 pm on Tuesday after negotiations ended with a promise that outstanding salary entitlements will be paid out.
Some 300 workers began a sit-in outside the Cabinet building in Cairo on Tuesday morning demanding the implementation of an agreement reached in May that increased their pay to a minimum of LE 320 per month and awarded them health insurance and pension agreements.
The agreement was scheduled to come into force in July. In August ICLD workers discovered that their salaries had not been increased, prompting some of them to refuse to pick up their pay, as well as a protest outside the Ministry of Local Development during Ramadan.
Hassan Megawer, head of the Egyptian Federation of Trade Unions, promised on Tuesday that faxes would be sent to all governorates instructing ICLD officials to pay August, September and October salaries at the old rates and pay out the difference between the old and new salaries owed to workers in November.
