CAIRO: Egypt’s General Authority For Supply Commodities (GASC) plans to hold tenders on Thursday and Sunday to purchase rice from local producers, GASC said.
Financial daily Al-Mal reported on Tuesday that the rice would be imported but Nomani Nomani, vice chairman of GASC, denied this.
"This is not a tender to purchase from the international market but from the local market," he said.
The rice will be supplied to GASC and two wholesale trading firms, the newspaper said, adding that the amounts would be announced on the days the tenders are held.
GASC has purchased mostly local rice in recent months. In a tender on Dec. 30, it bought 18,143 tons from the local market.
