CAIRO: The Giza Criminal Court sentenced a bus driver to death on Wednesday for shooting dead six construction company employees while driving them to work, the official news agency MENA reported.

Local media latched onto the unusual circumstances surrounding the rare multiple killing last July.

The driver told investigators it was an act of revenge against three of the employees with whom he hatched a plan to steal antiquities before they cut him out of the deal. Reports shed doubt on his sanity and state of mind at the time of the murder.

"The Giza Criminal Court ordered … the execution of the bus driver of Arab contractors, Mahmoud Taha Swellem," MENA said. It said the 52-year-old driver, who used an automatic rifle in the attack, injured six other employees.
