CAIRO: Al-Tagammu leftist party, member of the Egyptian Bloc, said Thursday it will postpone internal elections until after legislative elections.

"Due to the importance of the upcoming electoral battle and the attempts of some political streams to dominate the [next] parliament, we decided that all the party’s leaderships and members will focus on public and electoral work to build bases in all constituencies," the party said in a statement.

The party’s general secretariat, which met late Wednesday, also decided to assign its presidential council to reach internal consensus and scheduled a Sept. 10 meeting for the political bureau to form committees responsible for coordinating with the Egyptian Bloc.

Al-Tagammu quit the Democratic Alliance after demanding an apology for "violations" committed by members during the July 29 protests. Many Salafi groups, which dominated the protest, raised religious slogans during demonstrations, violating an earlier agreement among political powers.

The party was set to hold its General Conference in July to choose new leaders, but this has been repeatedly postponed.
