CAIRO: Activists from the April 6 Youth Movement that helped launch the popular uprising that ousted Hosni Mubarak were arrested on Tuesday for handing out flyers calling for a rally on the revolt’s first anniversary.

Police detained four activists — Sherif Mohamed, Mahmoud Zakaria, Mahmoud Hossam and Hassan Hafez — as they were handing out flyers and sticking posters calling on Egyptians to take to the streets on Jan. 25, the movement said.

"The continued treatment of political activists in this manner reminds us of the days before the revolution and shows that nothing has changed," the group said.

"This kind of behavior will not stop the movement from continuing to call for a protest on Jan. 25," it said.

Activists and political parties have called for a mass rally on Jan. 25 to continue to press for the demands of the revolution that toppled Mubarak and saw power handed to a military junta.

The Supreme Council of the Armed Forces, which enjoyed hero status at the start of the uprising for not siding with Mubarak, has increasingly come under fire for using Mubarak-era tactics to stifle dissent.
