CAIRO: Prosecution remanded in custody three members of the April 6 Youth Movement Democratic Front and released one pending investigations into charges of tarnishing Egypt’s reputation, disturbing security and distributing flyers without permission, according to lawyer Gamal Eid, executive director of the Arabic Network for Human Rights Information (ANHRI).
Sherif Mohamed Abdel Motteleb, Mahmoud Zakaria Mohamed, Mahmoud Hossam Eid and Hassan Hafez Kamel were arrested on Jan. 3 for handing out flyers calling for a rally on the revolt’s first anniversary on January 25.
The April 6 Movement Democratic Front is an offshoot the April 6 Youth Movement but there are no links between both groups, said Mahmoud Afifi, spokesperson of the latter.
ANHRI, which sent lawyers to the defendants, said in a statement that the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces is “using the same tools and techniques and even the same legal charges to justify curbing the right to political criticism and freedom of expression.”
“It’s time for the military council to understand that the Egyptian people do intend to claim their legitimate right to build their country on basis of law, justice, democracy and human dignity,” the statement said.
