ATHENS, Georgia: Coverage of the Arab Spring dominated the Peabody Awards, the oldest in broadcasting.
CNN, Al Jazeera English and National Public Radio all received the prestigious award Wednesday for their coverage of the movements that led to leaders being unseated in Egypt and Libya. Two Japanese news outlets won for their coverage of the country’s deadly earthquake and tsunami.
The awards recognize achievement and public service by TV and radio stations, individuals and the Internet.
Other Peabodys went to Comedy Central’s “The Colbert Report,” IFC’s “Portlandia” and the long-running quiz show “Jeopardy!”
The University of Georgia’s journalism school has administered the awards since 1940. An awards ceremony will be in New York on May 21.
