A car bomb exploded in a crowded street in Gaziantep in South-Eastern Turkey near the border with Syria on Monday night, according to Al Jazeera.

The blast left nine dead and dozens injured. The dead include four children and the injured include four critically wounded, according to AFP.

No one has claimed responsibility for the attack and the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) has denied responsibility for the explosion, according to Euro News.

For years the PKK has been fighting the Turkish state for an autonomous Kurdistan, an area inhabited mostly by Kurds located in South-East Turkey but also including parts of Syria, Iraq, Iran, and Armenia. The PKK is considered a terrorist organisation by Turkey, the United States and the European Union and has carried out bombings both inside and outside Turkey.

Earlier this month, the PKK abducted Huseyin Aygun, a Turkish Member of Parliament, resulting in an extensive manhunt to rescue him.  He was eventually released.
