The Revolutionary Socialists have announced a unified event called “Ayzeen Neish” (we want to live) that will take place today in six governorates to protest the proposed IMF loan and President Mohamed Morsy’s debt policies.
The loan represents the continuity of Mubarak’s economic policies that drowned Egypt in financial burdens and led to the suffering of poor Egyptian people, according to the group.
“The IMF loan represents a catastrophe,” said Hossam el-Hamalawy, a journalist and a member of the revolutionary socialists. “It’s being discussed among the elites but the simple people have no idea that they will pay the price.”
The event’s Facebook page claimed the terms of any IMF loan include lifting subsidies on basic goods and services without harming the privileges of businessmen. “The regime hasn’t taken any step to achieve the social justice claimed by 25 January revolution, without which Morsy would not have become president” a statement on the page read. The group said they must not let the poor pay for the regime’s financial crisis.
Events are scheduled for between 6pm and 8pm in six governorates including Cairo, Giza, Behaira, Sharqia, Damietta and Port Said.
“Thursday’s event is just a part of a series of events for our campaign” said el-Hamalawy. They are also organising forthcoming protests, exhibitions and human chains to spread awareness about various societal issues, he said.
He said they chose six governorates where the Revolutionary Socialists have a strong presence and can talk to the people about how dangerous the consequences of the loan could be.
