President Mohamed Morsy will meet members of the Supreme Council of Judiciary on Monday in response to the storm of protests from judges after his new constitutional declaration, presidential sources said.
Morsy met with his assistants and advisers earlier on Sunday to discuss the current polarized political situation splitting Egypt. Throughout the meeting, the President and his team agreed on the “extent of danger” presented by the current situation, and the “importance to immediately deal with polarisation,” presidential sources indicated.
Morsy’s advisers agreed with him to start an open dialogue with all political forces, including those who withdrew from the Constituent Assembly and those who are still working in it.
The president should also issue a statement to the nation exploring the “controversial” article about what the president’s supporters are portraying as his “shielding” declaration, to protect his decisions from judicial repeal.
Essam Elerian, presidential adviser, told the Daily News Egypt the team has proposed a number of “suggestions” to Morsy.
“The President will think about our recommendations and then see what to do,” Elerian said. He declined giving more information on the content of the meeting or the proposals.
On Thursday, Morsy issued a new constitutional declaration which stated that his decisions are above the law and cannot be repealed by any court. Since then protesters took to the streets around Tahrir Square, Al-Qasr Al-Einy and Mohamed Mahmoud Street. Demonstrations witnessed skirmishes with security forces that left hundreds injured.
