President Mohamed Morsy has proposed an initiative to discuss the next phase of Egypt’s transition “with all the political forces.”
In a statement released on a government website, presidential spokesperson Yasser Ali told the media on Sunday that “there are no concerns over the misuse of power.” He also called upon “the people to give priority to the higher interests of the nation.”
Ali highlighted that Morsy “stressed the independence of the judiciary as a respected authority.” He added that its independence is guaranteed by the “executive power and the Egyptian people and no one can be untouched.”
Ali pointed out that Morsy himself “stood with the movement for the independence of the judiciary in 2006.” He added that Morsy was imprisoned because of his participation in a protest in “defence of the judiciary and its independence.”
Ali added that if the draft constitution is approved by referendum on 15 December then all constitutional declarations since 19 March (the date of the last constitutional referendum) will be rescinded.
A march from Tahrir square to the presidential palace has been planned for Tuesday in opposition to Morsy’s constitutional declaration and the draft constitution.
