In an effort to encourage reading in impoverished areas, Diwan bookstore has started a new project with the support of Sadko Group. The project targets schools in lower income areas that lack proper financing and are often neglected by government oversight.
The inaugural school is in the Boulak neighbourhood in Cairo, where the school will start a reading corner for the kids. Diwan donated children’s and young adults’ books to the reading corner. The Salam school for primary students was one of the election poll stations during the first referendum. At the time, the school made it to the news when some citizens burned the images of Mubarak hung at the school.
The Social Development Department at Sadko Group is also conducting a weekly event for the school, where they showcase creative cultural readings and performance. The aim is to encourage students to be more creative and socially apt.
The summer program for the school year 2013 also includes other activities such as reading and literary criticism. Students will get to learn how to make a book summary and discuss it with their peers. They will also get to learn some acting as they are encouraged to act out the stories that they read.
