Four people who were arrested last month during a protest outside the home of Minister of Interior Mohamed Ibrahim have been released on Monday.
6 April spokesperson Khaled El-Masry said the detainees are being released without bail or any conditions. He does not yet know if the charges against them have been dropped. Three of the detainees are members of the 6 April Youth Movement.
Rasha Salem, the wife of Mohamed Mostafa, a lab director for a national petroleum company and one of the detainees said her husband is accused of insulting the minister.
In addition to Mostafa, 28-year-old teacher Zizou Abdu, 28-year-old sales manager Mamdouh Hassan, and Sayed Mounir, who is not a member of the group but was reportedly participating in the demonstration were also arrested.
On 29 March, protesters from the 6 April Youth Movement surrounded the house of Interior Minister Ibrahim, throwing women’s undergarments at his home and calling the ministry a prostitute of all regimes. Clashes erupted later in the night between police and protesters and four people were arrested.
Amnesty International reported that the detainees were moved around from one detention centre to another until finally being taken to Tora maximum security prison, also known as Al-Aqrab, a place reserved for the country’s most dangerous criminals.
In an attempt to bring attention to the detainees’ plight, the 6 April Youth Movement held a demonstration on the steps of the Press Syndicate on Sunday and called for the immediate release of the detainees.
