Political-driven calls to citizens to withdraw their deposits from Egyptian banks have yet to have any effect, according to Gamal Abd Al-Nasser Aqabi, President of the Egyptian Bank Employees Union.

Business is proceeding as normal within banks, he said, adding that strict security measures had been taken at bank entrances and exits, in order to prevent acts of theft and robbery from taking place at various branches.

Abd Al Nasser Aqabi said the public has become increasingly aware and conscious of the importance of banks and their role in daily life for all sectors of Egyptian society, both for individuals and companies.

Alluding to calls made by those belonging to specific political movements for citizens to withdraw their deposits from banks as, he called this “playing with fire”.

He further referred to banks and the services they provide as a “red line” whose violation would not be acceptable. Bank employees would continue to provide services to citizens regardless of statements made by any political faction. He stated that bank managers have been working hard to solve any crises that may occur, adding that employees are capable of thwarting any cases of vandalism or property destruction that may be directed at bank branches.
