Cairo is scheduled to see protests, both by those calling for the return of ousted president Mohamed Morsi and others commemorating the October War, heeding the calls of the interim government to celebrate in the streets.
The Muslim Brotherhood and the Anti-Coup Alliance earlier this week called on protesters to demonstrate in Tahrir Square on 6 October to reject military leadership’s role in the removal of Morsi from the presidency.
Interim president Adly Mansour called on Egyptians to gather in squares across Egypt to celebrate the anniversary of the October War during a Saturday speech commemorating the occasion. His media advisor Ahmed Al-Moslimany told state-owned MENA that those protesting against the army would be regarded as “agents of foreign elements.”
Demonstrators supporting the army and Commander-in-Chief Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi began filling Tahrir Square on Sunday morning, as those demonstrating against Al-Sisi gathered in Giza Square and other locations in the capital.
