An Al-Azhar University student gave her testimony on Saturday to the prosecution in an investigation into allegations that she was sexually assaulted by a policeman.

The student has accused a policeman of raping her inside of an armoured police vehicle during the dispersal of a protest at Al-Azhar University last December, according to state owned Al-Ahram.

The student told the Nasr City prosecution that she confronted the policeman for harassing another student and asked the policeman not to touch her. He then struck her and when she fought back, he forced her into an armoured vehicle, ripped her clothes and proceeded to sexually assault her, witnessed by other policemen.

Al-Azhar University has been the scene of violent protests since last year with many demonstrations opposing the ouster of former President Mohamed Morsi and the death and detainment of students during the clearing of two large protest camps last August.

On one Saturday towards the end of December one student was shot dead and 101 people were arrested following violent clashes between demonstrators and security forces.
