A car bomb has exploded at a military checkpoint in the North Sinai town of Al-Arish killing at least five policemen, state media has reported.
However, a North Sinai resident told Daily News Egypt that the explosion left at least 20 civilians injured, while six other civilians were left dead. The resident added that the car bomb targeted a checkpoint adjacent to several residential homes, which were left destroyed.
This was the second explosion of its kind to take place in Northern Sinai on Sunday, however no one has yet claimed responsibility for the attack.
State media further added that the casualties include “a huge number of civilians” as well. The car was equipped with explosive materials, which exploded after the policemen at the checkpoint tried to stop it by shooting gunfire.
On Sunday morning, six military personnel were killed and two others injured in a car bomb in the North Sinai town of Sheikh Zuweid, the official Facebook page of the military spokesperson reported. The North Sinai-based militant group, ‘State of Sinai’, claimed responsibility for the attack, according to Twitter accounts allegedly affiliated to the group.
