A policeman in the National Security department was killed in a drive-by shooting in Giza early on Saturday.
Six masked men on motorcycles shot the policeman, Ahmed Abdullah Saleh, in Kerdasa, Giza, according to a Ministry of Interior statement.
Insurgent activity targeting policemen and a concomitant high security presence have been on the rise since the ouster of former president Mohamed Morsi in 2013.
The latest of these attacks involving a drive-by shooting occurred in mid-April, when a police corporal was killed at a Qaliubeya Fire Department.
Militants target security personnel either by drive-by-shootings or bomb attacks. Vital facilities including power stations, electricity pylons and telecommunication branches are amongst the targets.
Also, seven bombs were dismantled Saturday morning targeting electricity pylons in Fayoum.
The frequency of these attacks is at its highest in the restive Sinai Peninsula, followed by Greater Cairo and other governorates.
