The attack came shortly after Cairo’s judiciary sentenced former president Mohamed Morsi and tens of Muslim Brotherhood members to death in the “Wadi el-Natroun prison break” and “conspiracy with Hamas” cases.
President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi said in the statement that judges should remain strong in the face of such threats. He also called for more security protection, and for the judges to carry on in their “noble jobs”.
It was reported that six judges were in the vehicle that was attacked. Pictures on social media showed two men and the driver bleeding inside a car. The vehicle appeaed to be a van with inside curtains, a VIP vehicle that could be easily identified.
This is the second attack on the judiciary in less than a week. A judge in Cairo survived an assassination attempt after a car bomb exploded in front of his house, with no injuries.
That judge, Moataz Khafaga, was also working with Muslim Brotherhood cases.
