Th Palestinian group, Hamas, condemned the Egyptian judicial system Saturday for sentencing to death Palestinians in the cases involving former president Mohamed Morsi. These cases have become known as the “Wadi El-Natroun prison break” and “conspiracy with Hamas”.
In a statement released by the group, spokesperson Samy Abu Zuhri stated that “the court decision was based on incorrect information. It includes Palestinian martyrs from before the Egyptian revolution of 2011.”
Palestinian defendants were sentenced to death in absentia, a legal procedure regarding absent defendants. Abu Zuhri further criticised a verdict on a Palestinian captive, Hassan Salama, who has been held in Israeli camps for 19 years.
The case renews conflicts between Hamas and the Egyptian authorities, which had previously banned the group’s activities, closed Gaza tunnels and declared Hamas a “terrorist organisation”.
