At least 16 people passed out inside a metro in Cairo due to overcrowding, the Ministry of Health announced Monday.
The underground metro broke down between the stations Mohamed Naguib and Al-Sadat in downtown Cairo. The ministry reported that 12 people were immediately provided medical assistance while four others were under medical care in hospitals.
Metros regularly suffer technical problems and are jammed especially during rush hours. Additionally, the underground has been occasionally targeted with small improvised bombs and metro stations have been regularly closed down for security reasons.
Minister of Transportation Hany Dahi met Monday with President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi on the latest developments in the electric-powered railway project, which is to be implemented in collaboration with a leading Chinese state company.
“The project comprises the construction of two railway lines; a passenger line, which will link the Adly Mansour metro station located in Al-Salam City to the Al-Robeiky area, passing through the new administrative capital and another freight line linking the city of Belbeis in the Sharqia governorate to Al-Robeiky,” the presidency said in a statement.
