The Supreme Electoral Commission (SEC) said Tuesday night that a total of 2,573 candidates will run for individual seats, in the first phase of parliamentary elections, scheduled to take place on 17-19 October.
The SEC highlighted that the number could still change, as some cases are still being looked into in court. Furthermore, six electoral lists were accepted, including the Al-Nour Party, “In the love of Egypt” (Fi Hob Misr), the Egyptian Front Coalition and Tayyar Al-Istiqlal – still completing their papers – Al-Sahwa Al-Wataneya Bloc, and ‘Egypt’s Call’ (Nedaa Misr).
The first phase covers the governorates of Giza, Alexandria, Fayoum, Beni Suef, Minya, Qena, Assiut, New Valley, Sohag, Luxor, Aswan, the Red Sea, Beheira, and Matruh.
Furthermore, the Ministry of Interior stated Wednesday that Minister Magdy Abdel Ghaffar held a meeting Tuesday regarding securing the elections, with the cooperation of the army.
“The meeting included ministerial assistants and chiefs of security directorates, discussing where the security plan stands and ensuring that all participating forces have a clear understanding of their tasks,” the statement said.
However, when contacted an official at the Interior Ministry’s media office said he could not provide information to Daily News Egypt regarding the number of participating forces, nor any further details, saying “the plan is still in preparation”.
