The now-dissolved Freedom and Justice Party (FJP) announced the arrest of two of its leaders while hiding in a private residence in Marsa Matruh, including Secretary General Hussein Ibrahim and party cadet Al-Refai Hassan.
A security source told state-owned news agency MENA that the Homeland Security apparatus learned of the hiding place of the two leaders and arrested them in coordination with the Marsa Matruh Security Directorate.
The Ministry of Interior’s press office was contacted to confirm the arrests, but a representative could neither confirm nor deny the incident.
The source told MENA that the two arrested leaders confessed that they were en route to escape to Libya.
The FJP said the two were taken to an unknown place, without any clear charges. However the party added that “the charges will be limited to belonging to an illegal group”.
Ibrahim is one of the Brotherhood’s most active politicians who participated in the parliament in 2000, 2005, and 2011.
