The Arab League has welcomed the outcome of the Vienna talks on Syria that were held on Friday by foreign ministers of the US, Russia, and several regional countries including Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Egypt and Iran.
Secretary-General of the Arab League Nabil El-Araby said in a statement that the upcoming meeting in two weeks “reflects the serious stance of the international community on the need to find a peaceful settlement to the conflict and put an end to the suffering of the Syrian people”.
The foreign ministers agreed on several points towards an end to the four-year civil war in Syria. This agreement encouraged the UN to begin a political process in Syria starting with a new constitution and elections. They also agreed on improving access for humanitarian aid to Syrians inside the country.
The Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesman said that Egypt stresses on reaching a political solution to the Syrian war.
Meanwhile, the US and Russia continued to disagree on the fate of the Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad. While Russia believes that Al-Assad should not be forced to go, the US does not want him to remain in his position after a political process begins.
