A Cairo Misdemeanor Court postponed the trail of Al-Kahera Wel Nas channel TV anchor Ibrahim Issa to 23 January after it was first postponed last week to 2 January.
Issa is accused of insulting Ahmed Khalifa Daib, the former parliamentary candidate for the Badari Constituency in the governorate of Assiut.
Daib filed a lawsuit against Issa for including Daib’s name among a list of names of candidates belonging to the banned Muslim Brotherhood in an episode of his show in October.
Daib denied Issa’s claim and noted call the TV anchor’s comments defamatory as they harm Daib’s parliamentary candidacy in one of the biggest constituencies in Assiut.
In December 2013, the Muslim Brotherhood was designated a terrorist organisation by the government. Strict government measures have subsequently been taken to a suppress the group and political dissent. Many fear being labeled as Muslim Brotherhood members or opponent.
