The 10 of Ramadan Prosecution unit ordered the detention of three police officers Saturday to be held while investigation continues into charges related to assisting the escape of a prisoner from the 10 of Ramadan Security Camp last week.
The defendants, a police lieutenant and two low-ranking officers, were on duty in 10 of Ramadan Security Camp’s detention centre when the escape occurred.
The Ministry of Interior said Sunday that the escaped prisoner was an alleged Muslim Brotherhood member who participated in acts of sabotage in Sharqeya. According to the ministry, the prisoner was part of a number of “terrorist cells”, which bombed electricity stations. When he escaped, he was still being held in detention pending investigations. He escaped during scheduled prison visits between fellow inmates and their families.
When asked about the identity of the escaped prisoner, the Ministry of Interior described his legal status, as described above, but did not provide his identity. Earlier this week, the prosecution investigated the prison and interrogated the officers before ordering to detain them.
Escape from Egyptian prisons are rare; most cases took place on 28 January 2011, after unknown personnel stormed into different prisons and police stations around the country, thousands of inmates were able to flee.
