Minister of Defence Sedki Sobhi met with US Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Joseph F. Dunford, the highest-ranking US military officer, in Cairo on Saturday to strengthen security partnership.
According to a statement from the US embassy in Cairo, Dunford affirmed his intent to maintain a strong military relationship with Egypt as a partner in the shared fight against terrorism.
The meeting was also attended by a number of military officials from Egypt and the US.
The military spokesperson, Colonel Mohamed Samir, said the meeting addressed military cooperation in the areas of training, exchange of expertise and supporting the combat and technical capabilities of the armed forces.
Egypt has been the second-largest recipient of US military aid since its peace treaty with Israel in 1979, receiving over $40bn worth of military aid in total.
Following the ouster of former president Mohamed Morsi in 2013, the US halted the transfer of F-16 fighter jets, M1A1 tank kits, Harpoon missiles and Apache helicopters, only releasing $572m of the total $1.3bn in military aid.
However, the freeze completely ended in March 2015 when Obama announced he would resume the full $1.3bn in military and economic aid.
