The Egyptian Center for Economic and Social Rights (ECESR) published on Sunday complaints filed on Saturday by the defense team representing lawyer Malek Adly, which claim he was mistreated while being held in detention.

Police officers allegedly insulted, beat, and tortured Adly following his arrival to the police station on Friday.

The complaints were filed to several authorities including the head judge of the Supreme Judicial Council, the prosecutor-general, the Lawyers Syndicate, and the National Council for Human Rights (NCHR).

Adly was arrested from his home on Thursday night, and after a three-hour long investigation he was remanded for 15 days pending investigations.

The lawyer is facing charges of attempting to topple the regime, amending the constitution, joining an entity that works against the government, and spreading false news.

In recent months, police brutality and assaults of detainees have reportedly escalated, with several NGOs and media organizations releasing reports containing accounts of political detainees who claim they were tortured while in detention.

A security crackdown has been ongoing in recent months, which has included arrests, arrest warrants, prison sentences, and travel bans targeting activists and political opposition members for their critical statements of the government and work documenting state violations.

Adly, a prominent lawyer, has been an active defender of human rights since 2008 and was a co-founder of the Front of Defence for Egyptian Protesters (FDEP). He currently works as head of the lawyers’ network at ECESR and is also a member of the freedoms committee at the Egyptian Social Democratic Party (ESDP).
