Finland shattered Russia’s dream of a home final at the ice hockey world championship when they stunned the hosts 3-1 in Saturday’s semifinal. They’ll play holders Canada or the United States in Sunday’s showpiece.
Russia, the 2014 winners, took an early lead in front of their passionate, 12,000-strong supporters in Moscow through Sergei Shirokov.
But Finland, who will play either holders Canada or the United States in Sunday’s final, rallied to turn the match around thanks to two goals from Sebastian Aho and another from Jussi Jokinen.
The Finns, who won their second and most recent title in 2011, comfortably repelled Russia’s attempts at a comeback, with goaltender Mikko Koskinen barely troubled in the final rubber.
Canada have not played a meaningful world championship game against the US since 1991 when they hammered their North American neighbors 9-4.
