Throughout the 2016 Madeira International Squash Tournament, which took place in Funchal, Portugal, Egyptian squash player Shehab Essam displayed an excellent performance.
In the tournament’s first round, Essam won against Spain’s Pascal Gomez, with scores of 11-8, 11-8, 11-2, and a final score of 3-0.
Essam continued his victory into the quarterfinals, after defeating Wales’ Emyr Evans, with scores of 12-10, 11-8, 11-1, and a final score of 3-0.
Unfortunately, Essam did not make it to the final match. The Egyptian squash player lost to England’s Patrick Rooney, with scores of 11-7, 12-10, 11-4, and a final score of 3-0.
Rooney was the tournament’s champion, after he won the final match against Edmon Lopez, with scores of 6-11, 11-8, 7-1,11-6, 11-8, and a final score of 3-2. The competition between both players was quite strong.
May was a fruitful month for Essam. He won the Arab Federation Open 2016, held in Tanta, after defeating his compatriot Karim El-Hammamy in the final, with scores of 11-9, 9-11, 9-11, 11-8, 11-9, and a final score of 3-2.
The 2016 Madeira International Squash Tournament’s prize money was $5,000.
