Saudi Arabia state TV announced that a suicide bomber was killed and two police officers injured in an explosion near a hospital in Jeddah early Monday.
Saudi Arabian TV cited a security source, saying that the attacker stopped his car in front of a hospital near the US consulate in Jeddah and detonated himself when two police officers approached him.
No other people were injured in the explosion.
According to the Saudi Arabian state news agency, the two police officers were suspicious of the attacker and tried to approach him before he ignited his suicide vest.
The Islamic State (IS) carried out several attacks in Saudi Arabia in 2014, targeting security officers and the Shi’a minority.
Meanwhile, the Kuwaiti official news agency (KUNA) reported that Kuwait had foiled three planned terror attacks by IS.
According to the statement, the plans included targeting a Shi’a mosque in Kuwait.
“Kuwait security agencies have carried out three pre-emptive operations in Kuwait and abroad that led to derailing a number of IS plots targeting Kuwait and arresting several IS members,” said a statement by the ministry of interior.
Last year, 27 people were killed when a suicide bomber exploded himself inside a Shi’a mosque in Kuwait.
