Arab-African relations are “good” and should not be negatively affected by the recent visit of Israel’s prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu, the newly elected Arab League secretary general Ahmed Aboul Gheit said Tuesday, as reported by state media.
Aboul Gheit addressed reporters saying that the African Union is supporting the Palestinian cause, while adding that Netanyahu’s visits to Kenya, Ethiopia, Rwanda, and Uganda aim to “break Israel’s international solitary status which is there due to its occupation of Arab lands, and its racist actions”.
During a meeting between Netanyahu and Kenyan president Uhuru Kenyatta, Netanyahu said that “Africa has no better friend than the state of Israel”, as reported by Israeli press.
However, Aboul Gheit said that Israel is promoting itself as a country that is able to provide security and development to other countries.
Netanyahu talked about the need to fight new forms of terrorism and Israel’s need of African support in the United Nations.
He is yet to visit Ethiopia, who has fallen into minor diplomatic disagreements with Egypt over the building of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD).
