On the occasion of a new graduating class from the Police Academy, Minister of Interior Magdy Abdel Ghaffar delivered a speech Tuesday, asserting that the ministry is keen to reshape its security strategy by putting more attention on respecting law enforcement in conjunction with human rights.
The celebration took place at the Police Academy headquarters in New Cairo and was attended by President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi and other high-ranking government officials.
Abdel Ghaffar urged the newly graduated police officers to spare no effort in securing Egypt so that the investments environment can flourish. He praised the military parades and presentations by the newly graduated officers during the celebration.
“The Interior Ministry has worked hard to address pre-emptive strikes on terrorist stationing points by depending on information and intelligence. The ministry is still working to develop itself in order to be able to face all challenges,” he said.
In response to frequent reports of police abuses against citizens, Abdel Ghaffar stated previously that police violations are individual cases and people should not generalise or blame the entire ministry for the actions of a few.
Reports of violations inside prisons and police stations have been on the rise across social media and media outlets. However, the police continue to deny these accusations.
Several human rights activists, organisations, and political parties have called on the ministry to limit and investigate these police violations against citizens and prisoners, referring to Egyptian law and human rights regulations.
On the other hand, several police officers have been referred to investigations or trials over reports of brutality.
