Member of parliament Haitham Al-Hariri demanded clarification on the reasons why rights lawyer Malek Adly has been deprived of his basic rights in prison in an enquiry to the Interior Ministry.
Al-Hariri criticised responses from prison officials to Adly’s family over the conditions of his imprisonment as the officials repeatedly told the lawyer’s family that “there are superior orders”. Al-Hariri asked in an official enquiry to Minister of Interior Magdy Abdel Ghaffar about the source of orders.
Violations continue against Adly despite complaints by his defence team to the ministry in attempts to improve his situation. He is in poor health, including blood pressure problems and aching joints, and is not given access to medication in jail.
The MP said that he has filed several complaints to the Ministry of Interior and the head of the prisons division, sharing that the last two complaints were submitted on 12 and 14 July. He also mentioned that Adly should receive his rights as a pre-trial detention detainee in accordance with prison regulation.
Adly was arrested on 5 May after a month-long campaign against the maritime demarcation agreement that saw the transfer of the Red Sea islands of Tiran and Sanafir to Saudi Arabian sovereignty.
Adly has been held in solitary confinement since his arrest on charges of attempting to overthrow the regime, spreading false information, and inciting protests.
