Member of the Doctors Syndicate’s Freedom Committee Taher Mokhtar along with two other detained students were granted release Wednesday, according to rights lawyers.
The release was conditional on EGP 5,000 bail for each, according to the Association for Freedom of Thought and Expression (AFTE) and the group Freedom to the Brave. Mokhtar was arrested in January from his apartment. The two students, Ahmed Hassan and Hossam El-Din Hamad, were also taken from the apartment.
The trio’s detention has been renewed since then. They were accused of possessing leaflets promoting dissent and sedition. Those documents were revealed to be related to the poor conditions in detention facilities. Having worked with vulnerable social groups such as refugees and prisoners, Mokhtar was officially assigned by the syndicate to handle the file related to the health standards of prisoners and detainees in Egypt.
Mokhtar is a prominent health activist concerned with health conditions in detention facilities and a member of the campaign Medical Neglect in Places of Detention is a Crime. He was working on a project assignment by the syndicate.
