ISMAILYA, Egypt: Three young Egyptian brothers were killed in the north of the country by a mine left over from the Arab-Israeli wars, a security source told AFP on Sunday.

Mohammad Hassan Gharib, 15, Gharib, 13, and Abdullah, 11, died instantly when they began playing with an anti-personnel mine they had found half-buried in the sand near the city of Ismailia, on the Suez Canal, the source said.

Egypt is one of the most heavily mined countries in the world, with millions of Egyptian and Israeli landmines in the Sinai from the wars of 1967 and 1973 adding to millions more laid in the Western Desert during World War II.
