CAIRO: Former African champions Zamalek of Egypt fired German coach Reiner Hollmann Friday after poor domestic and international results.

A statement from acting club chairman Mohamed Amer said the decision to terminate the contract of the coach was taken after Hollmann met the board here.

Since 59-year-old Hollmann succeeded former Netherlands superstar Ruud Krol in mid-year, he has not been able to lift the White Knights out of the doldrums.

The five-time winners of the African Champions League failed to progress beyond the group stage this year and lie sixth in the national championship, 10 points adrift of leaders Petrojet after 13 rounds.

Reports here said assistant coach Ahmed Ramzy was likely to take charge for a league fixture Monday against Harras Al-Hodoud, who are one point and one place above the fallen Cairo giants. But it was football director Ahmed Refaat who led the team on Monday night.

Zamalek lost the game 1-0.

Other reports have linked Zamalek with leading 2008 African Confederation Cup scorer Eric Bekoe from Ghanaian club Asante Kotoko, who scored 10 goals in the second-tier continental competition. -AFP
