MINYA: Ten people were killed, including two children, and another 10 wounded Sunday when a truck and a minibus collided on a desert road in Minya, police said.
The minibus driver lost control of his vehicle when a tire burst; the minibus was hit by a truck coming in the opposite direction, police said.
The accident occurred on a desert road between Cairo and Asyut, 380 km south of the capital.
About 6,000 people die and 35,000 are injured in road accidents each year in Egypt. The transport ministry says they are the second highest cause of death in the country and experts estimate they cause annual losses of up to $350 million.
Traffic regulations are often badly enforced while maintenance of vehicles is also poor. Many of the country s coastal and desert roads allow for high speeds and accidents caused by reckless overtaking are frequent.
