CAIRO: Egyptian police detained four Russian women on the Israeli border Monday who said they were attempting to cross to find work in nightclubs in the Jewish state, a security source told AFP. The four women in their twenties had donned the flowing robes of the region s nomadic Bedouin in their effort to slip across but were stopped by police on a routine patrol, the source said. Between 5,000 and 10,000 women work involuntarily in Israel s sex trade, according to human rights group Amnesty International, many of them victims of human trafficking. Many of the mainly east European women are smuggled across the Egyptian border, often on the underside of camels, according to the watchdog. The four women have been handed over to the Russian embassy in Cairo pending deportation, the security source said.
