CAIRO: Ten Egyptian police conscripts have been charged with torturing and beating to death a colleague and then trying to cover up the alleged murder as a suicide, a security official said on Tuesday.

In an unofficial sanction, Ali Zarif, 22, was locked up at a police camp in Alexandria on June 11 for having broken the rules, the official told AFP.He was allegedly severely beaten by the 10.

After Zarif died of his injuries in hospital, the accused said he had committed suicide, but the coroner rejected this argument because the body was covered in cuts and bruises.

Rights groups say the use of torture is widespread in Egyptian jails and police stations, while the interior ministry says those who carry out torture are punished. -AFP
