The Cairo Criminal Court postponed on Tuesday the trial of former Mubarak-era interior minister Habib El-Adly and twelve others in the case of embezzling money of the Interior Ministry to 18 February, according to state media.
The court postponed the case to continue hearing the defence’s statement.
El-Adly and twelve of his colleagues were referred to the criminal court over illegally seizing funds belonging to the Interior Ministry during their time in office. The defendants are facing accusations of illegally obtaining EGP 3.5m. They all have been banned from travel and have had their assets, and the assets of their spouses, frozen.
The former minister’s corruption case began in 2012, after he was removed from his position following 25 January Revolution of 2011.
More than 100 ministry officials were charged with corruption, all accused of accepting bribes. The court dismissed charges against at least 80 defendants in January 2016, due to a lack of criminal evidence and removed travel bans against them.
