Egypt’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned on Tuesday the recent attacks by Al Qaeda-affiliated militants that targeted Libyan oil facilities. The ministry stated that these attacks are threatening the recently achieved progress, according to a media statement released by the ministry spokesperson.
Egypt’s official foreign ministry spokesperson, Ahmed Abou Zaid, noted that it is important to not grant a chance to illegal groups to assume a political role in Libya through destructive acts, according to state-run newspaper Al-Ahram.
“It is important to mention that the attacks against the oil institutions in Libya are a threat to the recently achieved progress in the political scene,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Arab League general secretary Ahmed Aboul-Gheit noted on Tuesday that a possible meeting to push the peace process in Libya forward may be held by the end of March. The meeting will include representatives from the European Union for the first time.
He added—in a media statement he released following the end of the Arab foreign ministers’ meeting that has been held inside the Arab League’s headquarters in Cairo—that the meeting will take place before the launch of the upcoming Arab Summit scheduled to take place on 29 March in Jordan.
“The meeting regarding acceleration of the peace process in Libya will include the presence of representatives from the African Union, the UN envoy to Libya, and EU foreign affairs officials,” he said.
