In Washington on Wednesday, Egyptian Foreign Affairs Minister Sameh Shoukry explained Egypt’s views regarding combating terrorism during the meeting of the coalition against IS.
The meeting was also attended by ministers of other countries in order to discuss ways to fight IS.
Shoukry confirmed the necessity of adopting a comprehensive intellectual, organizational, and security approach to deal with the various dimensions of terrorism.
He also referred to Egypt’s pioneering role in fighting extremist ideology through Egyptian religious mediums.
On the other side, US secretary of state Rex Tillerson, who is heading the meeting, said that Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates have a significant role in fighting IS.
He stated that Washington is ready to intensify its efforts to eliminate IS, adding that number of foreign fighters joining IS has increased 90%.
Tillerson concluded that his county will work on returning all people displaced by IS back to their countries.
The meeting touched on the developments of the war on the organization, as well as ways to achieve stability in the areas liberated from IS and preventing its return.
On the sidelines of the meeting, Shoukry also met with a group of intellectuals, opinion makers, and writers belonging to a number of the most prominent university centers of research and thought.
These meetings came following the arrival of Shoukry in Washington to participate in the meeting of the international coalition against IS.
Among the intellectuals he met was Robert Satloff from the Washington Institute for Near East Policy.
During these meetings, Shoukry was keen on reviewing updates in Egypt, as well as updates on its role in regional issues.
The meetings included discussions over bilateral relations and the significance of US support to Egypt.
