Following a brief investigation, Azbakiya Prosecution released nine employees of Telecom Egypt after they had been arrested on charges of gathering illegally and participating in unlicensed protests.
The workers were detained for a whole day in the police station until completion of the investigation.
Media outlets reported that the prosecution accused the employees of using social media outlets to incite colleagues to hinder the company’s work, arranging an illegal protest in front of a vital institution, as well as unlicensed protesting.
The nine citizens, along with others, staged a protest on Sunday in rejection of unfair salaries and late bonuses. Security forces had dispersed the protest and arrested only nine of them, filing a report against them to the prosecution, which has investigated the issue.
Recently, workers in different companies throughout the country have protested, complaining about unfair salaries that are insufficient to cover their daily expenses. Conditions have worsened, especially over the last three months, as Egypt faced a series of price hikes due to the recent economic decisions made by the government in order to comply with the terms of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) loan.
Prices of most products, including essential goods, increased in a very short period, which heavily impacted low-income citizens.
