CAIRO: Israel allowed seven lorries loaded with Egyptian food aid to enter the Gaza Strip through its territory Thursday after the goods had been blocked for more than a month, security sources said. The 66 tons of flour and sugar donated by the Islamic Sharia Association was allowed through the Kerem Shalom crossing, on Israeli territory where the three borders meet, the sources said. Further relief aid donated by the Egyptian Red Crescent is expected to start flowing through the crossing from Sunday. The deliveries follow a summit between Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and President Hosni Mubarak in Sharm El-Sheikh last Sunday in which the Israeli leader pledged not to impede Egyptian humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip. A Western freeze on direct aid to the Palestinian Authority since Islamic militant group Hamas took power in March has combined with Israel s withholding of customs revenues to create a major economic crisis in the territories.
